Artist Statement:
While attending Buffalo State College as an art student, I visited the Albright-Knox Art Gallery that is directly across from the campus several times. Of the many contemporary works on view were small boxes made by Joseph Cornell (1903-1972). These constructions were enchanting little environments that I thought were terrific works. Many years later I made boxes and other constructions and I could say that Cornell was certainly an inspiration in many cases.
As he did, I enjoyed going to novelty stores and thrift shops as well as finding items in the trash. I had a large inventory of terrific things and the constructions for the most part were spontaneous: sometimes satirical, sometimes social comment, but either way very enjoyable to make.
